Katie & Colby’s September Wedding at Warwick Country Club

filed in

Last Friday was one of those September days in Rhode Island that felt almost too perfect to be real. Bright blue skies, warm sunshine, and the kind of golden evening light photographers dream about. And against the beautiful backdrop of Warwick Country Club, Katie and Colby officially began their next chapter as husband and wife.

But before the celebration really began, they chose to share one of the most meaningful parts of their day completely on their own.

Katie and Colby exchanged their vows privately following their first look, creating a quiet moment in the middle of a day filled with people, excitement, and anticipation. Their vows were emotional, incredibly sweet, and full of memories from the life they’ve already built together — years of learning each other, growing alongside one another, and loving each other a little harder with every passing year.

And if there is one thing you should know about Katie and Colby, it’s that neither one of them is afraid of a challenge.

They are both incredibly competitive athletes. Colby is an Ironman, Katie played soccer throughout college, and sports and fitness have continued to be a huge part of their life together. They’ve even run a marathon together in Italy — which, personally, feels like either the ultimate relationship bonding experience or the ultimate test of a relationship.😂

That same combination of determination, friendship, and not taking themselves too seriously seemed to carry throughout their entire wedding day.

Once the reception began, the speeches quickly became one of the highlights of the night. Colby’s younger brother, Jeremy, decided that “best man speech” was simply another term for “public roast of my older brother” and absolutely committed to the assignment. He had the entire room crying tears of laughter as he shared stories from a lifetime of growing up alongside a big brother he so clearly admires.

Then came Donna, Katie’s mom and maid of honor, whose speech brought an entirely different kind of tears. She fought through her emotions as she spoke about her daughter, creating one of those incredibly sweet moments where you could feel just how deeply this couple is loved by the people surrounding them.

And then came sunset.

I had been watching the light all evening — because, well, photographer — and when the sky started doing exactly what I hoped it would do, I quietly scooted Katie and Colby away from their reception for a few minutes of sunset portraits.

Or at least I thought we were quietly sneaking away.

As we walked outside, we realized that everyone — and I mean EVERYONE — had made their way onto the balcony overlooking the course.

Suddenly, instead of having this peaceful little sunset moment alone, Katie and Colby had their entire wedding cheering them on from above.

And it was perfect.

They laughed, their guests yelled and cheered, and what could have simply been a few beautiful golden-hour portraits turned into one of my favorite memories from their entire day. There was something so fitting about the two of them standing together in that gorgeous September light while all of their favorite people celebrated them from afar.

Because as beautiful as the details, the venue, the flowers, and the sunset were, that’s what Katie and Colby’s wedding really felt like from beginning to end: two people who genuinely love doing life together, surrounded by a whole lot of people who genuinely love doing life with them.

Katie and Colby, congratulations. May your marriage be filled with many more adventures, finish lines, trips around the world, ridiculous amounts of laughter, and sunsets worth interrupting dinner for.

And for the record: when your photographer interrupts your reception and says SUNSET. NOW.… you grab your spouse and don’t ask questions. 😉
